CECILY.info: Online Misogyny Writ Large: The Murder of Asia McGowan

The police response is atrocious, but what make me sad is that I can say the response probably would have been a lot different if Asia wasn't black, wasn't a woman, or if this didn't begin online. I have a feeling that the fact that it started online made the police complacent. Disgusting.

I feel you, Anika. I'm trying not to have a cynical outlook about this, but I'm failing. I want to hear from some editors why they decided not to cover this story.

I also think this has a lot to do with Detroit and it's downtrodden economy and government; the consistent and persistent patterns of violence afflicting it's black community; and, a police force that, obviously, hasn't moved into the 20th century.

But, regardless of the medium, so often, threats of violence against women go unchecked.

And, add to that, a history of mental illness in a country that does little to treat/support those with severe mental illness and you've got a tragedy like this.
